Brown seaweeds are important habitats along the coasts of cold and temperate regions and are also candidates for biofuel production. But they are susceptible to parasites that slow down growth.

Dr Claire Gachon and colleagues from »ئة«تسئµ and the University of Konstanz in Germany have developed a genetic test to identify the presence of Eurychasma, the most common known parasite infecting brown seaweeds. The research has just been published in the journal .
